Nathan boles award recipient.

Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is celebrating individuals and teams whose work demonstrates excellence in patient care, collaboration, innovation and a commitment the legacy of our Hotel Dieu Hospital site.

The ceremony, held on April 20, recognized recipients of this year’s Team Awards, the Jeanne Mance Award and the Jerome Le Royer Award.

“We celebrate this year’s winners and nominees both incredible accomplishments,” said Indira Naraine, vice-president, people, mission and values and chief human resources officer at KHSC. “Every day, these individuals go above and beyond to make a real difference to our organization in the care we provide to our patients and their families.”

The Jeanne Mance Award:

This award is presented to an individual who embodies the HDH site’s mission and values, and was awarded to Groundskeeper Nathan Boles. Renaud Golsse, co-chair of the Mission and Values Coordinating Committee, highlighted the often-unseen work that Boles does to support safe and accessible care.

“For our HDH site to function, for our staff and physicians to engage with patients and families in a safe and people-centred way, there is some very important work that takes place behind the scenes,” Golsse said. “Nathan’s notable dedication and tireless service ensures patients and staff can safely access care, particularly during challenging winter conditions.”

The Jerome Le Royer Award:

This award recognizes a team that exemplifies the mission through collective action. This year it was awarded to the HDH Ambulatory OR Team.

“Their skills, knowledge, and steadfast compassion have deeply impacted the countless lives of patients and their families,” said board chair Sherri McCullough. “They pursue excellence in their commitment to providing excellent patient care, and they live HDH’s Mission and Values each day.”

KHSC Team Awards:

KHSC also presented its Team Awards across three categories. 102 nominees were spread across five KHSC teams.

  • In the Care category, the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Program was recognized for its trauma-informed, patient-centred approach and extensive community outreach. The team delivered more than 50 educational sessions in recent months, reaching over 1,000 individuals across the region and strengthening access to care for vulnerable populations.
  • In the Knowledge category, the Occupational Therapy (OT) and Kidd 2 ICU team was honoured for advancing best practices in OT within the critical care program. The team focused on education and worked with a wide range of partners to improve patient outcomes and establish new standards of care.
  • In the Leadership category, the PET-CT Project team received the award for successfully launching the first PET-CT program in southeastern Ontario. The initiative has improved access to critical diagnostic imaging for more than 1,000 patients in the region, eliminating the need for travel to larger centres and supporting advancements in cancer care.

“These nominated teams are setting the bar high. They’re making an undeniable impact on those we serve,” said Dr. David Pichora, KHSC president and CEO.

The awards reflect a broader culture of compassion, collaboration and innovation across the organization.

“Today’s award recipients symbolize the excellence that exists throughout the entire hospital,” McCullough said. “They show us that mission doesn’t exist on a plaque but instead walks and talks among us in ways that can truly transform lives.”
