Michael Velasquez

Patient & Family Advisory Council member

My perspective is shaped by lived experience within the KHSC health care system, which includes undergoing two knee surgeries, a medical trial through Queen’s University & the odd ER visit. Through these experiences, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the patient journey and developed a strong appreciation for the importance of clinical excellence, clear communication, and compassionate care. I recognize the significant role healthcare professionals play in supporting patients through both routine and complex medical experiences.

In addition to my own care, I witnessed similar procedures through my sister. Observing her journey highlighted how effectively shared knowledge, communication, and guidance can positively influence ongoing recovery.

I also became a first-time father during the COVID-19 pandemic. Navigating this period deepened my respect for the resilience and dedication of healthcare professionals, while also underscoring the importance of supporting families during times of uncertainty.

I am motivated by a desire to give back to a community that has provided meaningful care and support to both myself and my family. Through my role as a Patient Advisor with Kingston Health Sciences Centre, I actively contribute to patient centered perspectives to help enhance quality of care, safety, and the overall patient experience. More recently, contributing to the voting committee for the Exceptional Healer Award, which recognizes outstanding care and compassion demonstrated by healthcare professionals.
